RE: The Groups
I think it's good that we have gotten Croatia, that way we will be able to compare the new managers team with Mclaren's team, to see how far we have progressed.
![]() If anyone is interested in highlights involving any of these teams: Arsenal | Aston Villa | Chelsea | Liverpool | Newcastle | Man City | Man United | Tottenham | and/or the UEFA Cup and Champions League [PM me] Need a BASIC signature done... Just need help... Please PM me. |

RE: The Groups
not really
think about it Whats the chance of any of the back 5 (From Carson, M. Richards, Campbell, Lescott and W.Bridge) playing or even being in contention for a place for the next Croatia game. McClaren's failure was more than just the Croatia game - he took England one step backwards - I'm pretty sure if Terry and Rio, or even just one of them had played it would have been different. If the next manager qualifies for 2010 SA then compare that to McClaren. McClaren was forced to pick shit for this game, the chances of the next manager being in the same position is highly unlikely.

RE: The Groups
I guess that's what I was thinking--I have trouble separating manager from team, because in my eyes they are one and the same. Management chooses teams and management, well, manages teams. Management creates the team, is the team, ought to eat sleep & breathe the team.
Obviously players are the ones who hit the pitch and do the hardest work, but every generation of footballers brings talent comparable to the previous. There will always be strong strikers, strong midfielders, etc. So future managers will have similar pools to select from as past managers--the names and styles may be different and some more memorable than others, but a good footballer is a good footballer. How a new manager arranges his team and handles them will, I think, signify the improvement of the team as a whole. Players and manager. That said: I'm talking about an ideal situation. When you have players out on injury or suspension you have to make tough choices. For the last Croatia match, I think McClaren made poor choices even then (and there is at least one player I think he ought to have considered long ago and didn't)--BUT he was definitely limited by the challenges the injury situation presented. So there's a caveat to my opinions above.
