Italy football fan dies in fight
A football fan has died from a gunshot wound to the head during fighting between rival supporters in Italy.
The violence broke out between fans of Roman team Lazio and Turin-based Juventus at a motorway restaurant near Arezzo in Tuscany.

Reports say the victim, a Lazio fan, may have been shot by a stray police bullet. An investigation is under way.

The Lazio fans were travelling to a match against Inter Milan, which has been suspended following the death.

Other games were starting 10 minutes late with players and officials wearing black armbands.

The Juventus fans were reportedly on their way from Naples to an away match against Parma.

News of the violence apparently sparked clashes between fans and police in Bergamo, where Atalanta were playing Juventus.

Prime Minister Romano Prodi said the episode was "very worrying". In April his government introduced a law aimed at stamping out football hooliganism.

It was enacted after a policeman was killed in rioting at a match in Sicily in February.

Yet another sad day in italian football, and i think that its only going to get worse, they had to cancel the atalanta milan game due to the atalanta ultras trying to break down the barriers at there own ground, shocking...

Always a risk if you want to be a hooligan.

Italian football is making a joke of itself. Regarded as one of the big 3 with england and spain....
Where can you start? Match fixing claims, seemingly proven, involving the biggest and highest reputation clubs?? Players hit by missiles during games? Hooliganism, home and away, and now fans getting shot by police. What a shambles.

RE: Italy football fan dies in fight
i saw the news the other day and there were videos of the ongoing riots.......i even saw the inter milan players pleading to the fans to remain calm but their efforts were futile...its a shame really...as it only brings disrepute to the game. The blame has to be on the authorities too for not implementing more security measures to curb these events....These are not football fans.....these are lunatics screaming their begotries and hatred which sadly would imminently end in violence. The day people stop hating is the day we are all in our graves apparently..sad..but true....

It's really dissapointing, coz Serie A is such a good league and things like this have to spoil it.

Italian football to be suspended

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has suspended next week's Serie B and C matches after the latest fan violence.
On Sunday, games were halted across the country and police attacked after a Lazio fan was shot by a policeman.

Italy's Euro 2008 qualifier away to Scotland on Saturday means there are no top-flight Serie A games next weekend.

But FIGC president Giancarlo Abete has not ruled out the possibility of the postponements continuing after the international break.

Unfortunatly the fan was not a holigan, just a fan in the wrong place. He was close friends with 2 of the Lazio players and was known by most of the squad. He was on his way to meet one of them before at the hotel before the match.
