RE: Italy football fan dies in fight
Horrible thing really, my thoughts were with those struck by the tragedy when it happened. I don't support the mob behavior, I think it makes the sport look bad and it makes it dangerous for fans who don't behave that way to go to stadiums, etc.
I was in Cardiff around the time they opened the stadium there. There was a huge match and I came in from London on a train full of hooligans. And the rest were vocal drunken fans. It was actually a fun trip, until we stepped onto the platform. All of a sudden a riot erupted when the two sides met. It wasn't a bad one.
But as things developed the friend I was with was absolutely terrified, whereas I thought it was a bit of a laugh--I knew it wasn't going anywhere serious because the riot police had already been called out and were handling it probably more seriously than needed to be. My friend was traumatised, now she's got a bad taste in her mouth about matches.
So point is, soccer lost a potential fan that day, now she won't even discuss it. On the smallest scales to the most dramatic and dangerous ones you just have to know there are and will be repercussions for that kind of behavior, you know? Whether they are obvious or subtle.
Serie A is indeed a fine league with so much more for the world to see than this kind of crap.

Could be fine--I know that Italy heightened security for United fans following last year when 11 United fans were put in hospital in Italy after a Roma/Man Utd match. So perhaps security for away fans has been raised across the bar.

My guess is they will go that direction. The UK heightened security to lessen incidences of violence, I can't imagine any country where these incidences are on the rise would fail to react the same.
