How to record streaming WMV/ASF/MMS-links using VLC Media Player

oh, i follow your instructions for the vlc player. not sure whart you mean at forst about window media player on your diagram at the start so ive gone straight to the vlc instructions, followed them, the bit at the end about
:OK and VLC should start play and also capture the video to the file.
i click ok and i go back to the OPEN box, i click ok on that and nothing happen?
can you help, is it so obvious that i cant see it?
